Nanhai ranks among the areas with most distinctive and advanced private economy in the Pearl River Delta. The private economy in Nanhai experiences three stages: Primitive accumulation period - from the early stage of reform and opening-up to 1992, it "Divides the Chinese Economy in Three" with state-own economy and collective economy; scale expansion period - from 1992 to 1997, it supports "the half of the entire economy" of Nanhai; and period for uplift of quality - from 1997 till now, its gross earnings accounts for 70 percent and more of the economy gross, becoming the "ridgepole" of supporting the entire economy in Nanhai.
In recent years, with the implementation of the policy of "Support the large-scale, excellent and top enterprises" and the strategy of Brands Set the Pace, the private economy has developed rapidly, gradually obtaining strong scale effect. At present, total 80 thousand non-state-owned enterprises exist in the whole district, among which nearly 20 thousand in industrial field, and industrial enterprises with total output value over 100 million yuan exceed 100. Industrial groups emerge in fields of aluminum section bar, textile, underwear, hardware, household appliance, shoemaking, toy, lamps for decoration, architectural ceramic, automobile assembling and spare parts manufacture to foster the good fame of "Made in Nanhai" which is known well home and abroad.
Private economy has become an important carrier in developing internally driven and externally driven economy. Nanhai increases efforts to implement the strategy of "Internally supported and externally introduced" for the private enterprises, internally, support the private enterprises in setting up and developing technical innovation system, enhance the kernel competitive power of the traditional industries; externally, "introduce the large-sized, excellent and top enterprises", encourage and support private enterprises in fulfilling a breakthrough of development by multiple means of amalgamate, recombination, absorption of foreign capital, listing at home and abroad etc.

There are over 240 manufacturers of aluminum section bars in Nanhai, which the total output accounts for 60 percent of the whole province and 40 percent of the whole country. Dali is the "No. 1 Town of Aluminum Section Bars in China."
Nanhai has over one thousand manufacturers of a variety of hardware. Jinsha, a place in the prefecture of Danzao, is known as "Capital of Daily-used Hardware in South China".
Xiqiao Town enjoys the reputation of "Famous Town of Fabrics in China", with more than 1300 textile manufacturers, it is the second largest textile fabrics production and sales base in the country.
Yanbu, a place in the prefecture of Dali, is the important underwear production bases in China.

[Technical Innovation] Give full play to advantage of informatization construction, Nanhai encourages and supports enterprises, banks in technical innovation, speeds up the reform and upgrade of traditional industries. 8 vocational technical innovation centers, organize 49 engineering research centers of district-level, city-level and provincial-level. Intellectual property right working system basically established, patent application exceeded over 3504 in 2004, taking the lead among district of the same level in the whole country.The output value of high and advanced technological industry is 30.4 Billion Yuan.
